Floyd the Turtle

We already let him go.

Complain, Complain, Complain

I have to admit, I haven't been outside a lot this last week. The boys feed the animals in the morning and evening. Dan helps sometimes. We used to all go out, but Dan is busy working inside and I am pathetic. Last night, the younger three were going to take care of it, as Alec was helping Dan. I thought they could handle it and they were doing a fine job, but here's what happened:

First, they ran in because one of the goats, named Sally, got out and onto the neighbor's land. We have never had a problem with goats getting out before, but it has been a problem here, lately. We all went out to get her and help them finish up. I realized the wire on the goat's door has a big hole in it--Dan said the boys had told him the other day but her forgot. That wasn't how she got out, but it needed fixing. Dan fixed that, Ian filled in the hole she crawled through. Turned out a buck had gotten out and tried to work his way into the girls and hence, the fence hole.

Then I was petting Nellie, the dog, and realized she had an eye infection. For goodness sake. I am trying colloidal silver for it. Then I realized someone has been stomping on my garlic, which is one of the few things I seem to be able to grow. ARGH!

To further complain, Alec has a terrible rash from the last time he was cutting brush. He has done it several times and been fine but he is a mess now. I am using my normal stuff to alleviate the itching but he is getting really frustrated. He wants to go to the doctor, but I am guessing they would want to put him on steroids and I am not going for that.

Had the computer company call this morning. I was having a techno-dork problem with the phone and hung up on the guy. He called later and complained about it and said he had planned to cancel my computer order. Dingbat. I told him to knock it off--I placed my order and paid for it so make my computer already. Then he wanted my middle name. I told him he didn't need my middle name to make a computer so just do it. I am getting grumpy in my old age. So, some guy in Pakistan doesn't like me now. Oh, actually, that probably isn't good these days.

I think that is all the griping I will do today.

More on Friday

So many weird or funny things seemed to happen today. Maybe not to you, but to me! I just had an argument with Adam about whether there are time-outs in the Quiet Game. He wanted to play the QG with me but within 15 seconds he called time out! As if!! What a goof ball.

Bought a glider rocker at Walmart today. The wood matched my chocolate bedroom furniture EXACTLY. How cool is that? Buying, it however, was not cool. I wanted that and a couple of storage cabinets, so I explained that to a lady in the baby department and asked if she'd get me help. She griped and groaned like you would not believe. She told me she could get the glider on a flat cart but didn't know how I'd get the other furniture out. When I suggested she could just go over with me to put it on the same cart, it was like I was suggesting something crazy. It was something else. Finally, I told her I didn't understand what the problem was--I was a customer and she was getting paid to help me. She just started laughing and then she was as sweet as pie. Couldn't have been nicer. Nuts. Her name was Marge--maybe she was grumpy because she spelled her name wrong, eh Marg?

On the way to the store, Ian and I found a turtle in the road--it was so pretty. Ian got it and we brought it home. It is in a bin with grass, but we'll let it go tonight. I'll post a pic later.

The little boys are going to do summer reading program at the library this summer. We were there this afternoon and talking about it and Adam said he was really nervous about it! Kids are so funny. I told him it would just be he and I sitting on the couch reading.

Someone in Russia read my blog! How cool and international am I?? Actually, my cousin and his wife and daughter and there right now. It is so neat--my cousin-in-law is sending pictures out everyday for us to see. Ian is all nervous that Russia is a dangerous place and they might not let them come home!!

Techno-Mama

I am so techno-cool. I bought a blue tooth head set yesterday and I can't get over how nice it is. I hated talking on the cell phone at home--it is too little.

Also ordered myself a new laptop today. The kids really needed a new computer--most of their games work on my laptop but not the old computer since we updated it. The old one is 11, which, of course, is ancient in computer years. So, I will have my new one (which is pink!!) and they will have this one. Not sure who will be happier--them or me.

I love my new internet connection. Verizon just came out with it a few days before I went in to the store.

So, it is the weekend, already--had you heard?? Whipping off the last basement issues. I need to go buy some blinds for the mudroom windows and a pantry for down there. We are going to put the little freezer, an old fridge and a pantry in there.

Decided we should start looking for a new vehicle for Dan. The Taurus is eleven years old and has been on its last legs for some time. With our lifestyle, it is silly for him to not have a truck. So, the search begins. He'd like a motorcycle, too. Wish we could get both.

I Don't Even Know What Day it Is

Oh, kids, this old gal is starting to slow waaay down. In the last week, I have gotten next to nothing done. And as I look at the to-do list for today. I can't imagine getting much of it accomplished. Make shampoo bars? Surely not. Get soil sample and take it into the county extension office? HA!

We need food, so that will obviously have to happen. There is a parent's meeting tonight for the Bible Bee. We have so few obligations, you would laugh at how much whining we have done about having to go to this meeting. The leader wanted to have an ice cream social, but I told her we just wanted to get down to business and get it done (although I said it in a nicer way--really).

Just heard about a baby born on Ian's birthday--his dad is preparing to leave for Iraq at some point, but they let him go home to see his baby born. Apparently, that is a new thing. Can't imagine having a baby without my husband. Aren't babies just about the best thing ever? They just make everyone happy. If babies don't make you happy, you are weird, for sure.

Ian opened the top of his ant farm (it says to do that) and one got out. I can not believe he and Alec actually caught the thing with tweezers and got it back in alive. I would have smushed it.

I need to pick a paint color for my living room. I still haven't figured out what color to paint the boys bathroom. I bought those cool robot pictures when we first moved in. I still don't have a decent shower curtain, I don't love the towels I picked and I can't decide on a color paint. Good grief.

Birthday Boy

The pictures posted backwards. The cake had Bavarian Cream inside and ganache instead of frosting. I can do a decent birthday cake. Alec bought everyone a little Ben & Jerry's.

This is just to pick on Dan. He is a really good bowler, but had a bad day--in the first game, Evan beat him. That is worse than when Ev beat me at chess.

Ian has a mean spin to his ball. We went where we were on the bowling league--the lady was so nice. She didn't charge us for shoes and gave us a discount.

Note paint samples in background--they are looking at Ian's Ant Farm. It is some new fangled type that has gel instead of sand and they eat the gel.
We ate lunch at Cracker Barrel. I have been there twice in my life and hated it both times. Hated it. But Ian liked it so that is nice for our last visit ever.

Birthday Eve

Dan got a lot done this weekend. By the end of the week, my lower level should look normal. It feels so nice to be in a room that is put together.

Some short people and I are running errands to get food stuff for Ian's birthday. And some electronic devices from Goodwill. We are giving him a bunch of old things, like the cell phones I washed and old clocks and radios and then tools with which to take them apart. He likes that. Got him some books Alec found and the movie Bolt and an ant farm. He wants to go bowling and to Cracker Barrel. Wants me to make cinnamon rolls for breakfast--I really do make fabulous ones. Wants a cake with Bavarian Cream filling.

We don't do birthday parties, so I don't have all that to deal with. The last one we had was when he was five. We invited a few church families and ended up with about 20 kids. The other parents all told me they didn't do parties. I was all like, "That's allowed????" And since then we stopped having parties with other people's kids. And it works just fine for us.

Found my librarian from Boyceville on facebook. You know you are a nerd when you want to be FB friends with your former librarian.

Doesn't Feel Like Monday

The kittens seem ok, except Beulah has been putting them in her mouth to play. Reminds me of a King Kong movie.

Happy Birthday to Laura up in Eau Claire. This was my mother's birthday, too. She would have been 70 today, had she not chosen the bottle over life. No, I'm not bitter. Really.

Still finishing up the den. Dan did a lot, but I got an amazingly small amount of work done this weekend. Decided to give Facebook another try. I signed off in the fall--I was learning waaaay too much about people and there was so much ugliness during the election. But, I had fun this weekend finding old friends. Talked on the phone to a gal I worked with at the Neurosurgeons way back in the early 90's. She moved down to Texas because she got some ailment that made her hands unable to move when she got cold. She also has narcolepsy and she told me she now takes the date-rape drug at night and it has improved her life tremendously. She said the prescription costs $2,000 a month and she has to keep it locked up in her house. She is something else.

I signed up to judge a speech round at the competition Crazy Margie is coming down for--aren't I high falutin'?? Actually, they need 900 judges, so they probably aren't picky.

Seven Weeks and Counting

Did you know I was having a baby in seven weeks? That seems very close. I feel like there is so much to accomplish each week.

Like, this week, for instance. I need to take my glasses in to be fixed, as a precious angle of mine just sat on them. Am planning to try to get some soap made--never got around to that. Have all the stuff I need. Just not the gumption. Ian turns eleven on Wednesday, so need to get a cake and cinnamon rolls made by then. He wants to go bowling and to Cracker Barrel--he has never been there before and I am not sure what the appeal is.

Also, hoping to get the basement details all finished. We need to decide what we are doing with our stairs. They are in terrible shape.

Right now, I have one kid talking to me about how many kilowatt hours of energy he produces and another one taking every one's weight and dividing it by 2.02. Have no idea why.

Dan got the den floor done yesterday--looks so nice. Looks like a room and not a basement. He is putting trim back up now. I need to get the closet back together but I feel like a slug right now.

Outdoor Cats

We took the door off the live trap and put their food in there so the dogs couldn't get to it.
That's Brody supervising.

The kitten was sniffing around the feathers of the deceased chicken. Nellie is very interested in the kittens. I have the window open to yell at her every now and again.

Memorial Day Weekend

I know I am anti-social, but you could not get me traveling this weekend for anything. I want to travel when nobody else is traveling. Not that I have anywhere to go, anyway...

We emptied out the den, except the bookshelves and Dan has started putting down the floor. He is starting with the back wall and when he gets part done, we'll move the bookshelves back onto it and he will finish. I love books, but they are such a pain when it is time to move them.

Got my haircut last night and a pedicure. Aveda salons smell so good--if my house could smell like that, I think we'd all float around serenely all the time. They had small smooth rocks in their bathroom sink--it was cute, but of course I just thought about my people spitting toothpaste out on it.

A hair stylist next to me was telling her client she was pregnant for the first time. She said she didn't care if she had a boy or girl the first time and wouldn't mind having two girls but no way would she want two boys. Had to giggle.

The kittens got moved outside to the playhouse that used to be a chicken coop. The dogs seem to be ok with them. They all have been around kittens but they were never chicken eaters before, so I am a little nervous.

We have bucks getting out of their pen. I thought I had a genius idea of just buying a buckling every spring, letting him mature and breed the girls and then butcher him. Then you would always be getting new bloodlines and wouldn't have to feed a buck all winter. Then I remembered you generally castrate meat animals so the meat doesn't smell like a buck, which is one of your yuckier smells. I am researching it right now.

Tile Removal

Second Shift

Back to Almost Normal

Margie sent me a list of internet providers in my area that might work, but none did. I ended up going to Verizon, which is my cell provider, and asked about getting online at home. Had a nice young guy talk in old lady terms so I would understand. The just came out with a wireless thing that will work with several computers at a time. Had 30 days to try it so I brought it home. I am getting the radio programs I like and the kids' computer geography games are working, so I guess we should be good. Costs more than I'd like, but that is what you get for living in the boonies. The librarians will wonder what happened to me.

Flooring, Hugs and Cat Barf

Had a grand evening with our dinner guests Wednesday. Even managed to get the house in order. Their kids were so tickled with our tramp. I am sure they will be tramp owners before too long.

Yesterday, I had lunch with a lady I met scrapbooking last week and a friend of hers who homeschools and has six kids. It was so much fun to gab with the gals. They both hugged me when I left and it dawned on me I think those were the first hugs outside my family I have had since I got here. They told me about a used book store in Clemson—ended up picking up the kids and taking them to it. Found some good books.

We picked up flooring for the den last night. In case you haven’t looked lately, flooring is expensive. I actually yelled at the kid checking us out to not hit the total button on the register. I didn’t think I could take it. That will be our fun Memorial weekend activity.

Today is the chiro, library, Walmart (I know, you are so jealous) and then tonight I am getting my hair cut and a pedicure, as I can’t reach my toes very well. The other day I was on the deck barefoot and a piece of wood got jammed right into a cuticle on a toe. Oh! It hurt and bled and bled, but all I could think was “No!! This is going to ruin my pedicure!!”

Some chickens got out last night and a dog ate one. Oh, that is soooooo not good. They never did that in Wisconsin. Why now? Dan gave them all a good talking to. We need to get the kittens outside. Will work on that tomorrow. Gave them soft food the other day and they ended up throwing up from it! YUCK! We just can’t win for losing with our animal husbandry lately.

Wednesday at the Library with Two People Looking for Books Right by Me and Driving Me Nuts

Yesterday was a hormone charged pregnant gal day--nothing good about those. Felt horrible and totally overwhelmed with life and all weepy and useless. Gag.

Turns out the turkey situation ended up kind of neat. We have a boy and girl each of the Royal Palms and Bourbon Reds who survived. We will try keeping them. Then we have five Broad Breasted Bronze, which are monster huge things. They will go to the freezer some day. We will try to find a processor to butcher them, as we have no time, energy or interest in doing it ourselves at this point.

Talked to fabulous former neighbor yesterday. The folks who bought our place us there (now officially known as Beulah Land) are having an anniversary party up there next month. They are actually having Buddy Davis up there to perform. My kids absolutely flipped out when I told them. I asked her to take his picture by the house that Dan built--thought that would be a neat memento.

Noticed one of the little girl goats has an udder that splits into two at the end and has two openings. That is interesting. Haven't dealt with that before. The bucks started hanging out too close to the berries and artichokes yesterday so they are back to confinement.

I took time the other day to put cardboard over the artichokes to keep down weeds and put some branches on top. We had a really windy day yesterday and some artichokes broke because of the stupid cardboard. GREAT!

Evan's bowling pal and his family are coming for dinner tonight. I am supposed to be at the grocery store right now buying food.

Dan got the bathroom all done and we will put that back together today. The mudroom floor is done so we will put our countless pairs of shoes back. Next weekend is the den floor. And that is all the big work for the basement.

We are toying with the idea of not removing the popcorn off the living room and kitchen ceilings. At least for now. I just don't think we'll complete it all before the baby comes otherwise.

Monday at the Library

I am writing this at home and then will post it Monday at the library after Adam’s orthodontic appointment. His mouth is such a mess, they wanted to see him six months after his first appointment. He loves the attention.

Dan is cleaning up the grout in the mudroom. Both rooms turned out great. I guess tomorrow we will put Alec’s bathroom back together. And finish painting the den. That is enough for one day, isn’t it? There is so much to get done. Next weekend will be the den floor.

Dan had to take apart the lawn mower—it was a mess. I think he got it all fixed except reverse isn’t working. He asked Alec how much he needed that. Yikes. Fortunately, we have a lot more weed than grass because our grass is about three feet high. No, seriously. We’ve been busy, what can I say? Our weedeater died, also. Need to buy a new one of those. Always something.

We moved the turkeys into the buck pen. Not sure why that seemed like a good idea but it did. Then it rained and they made no effort to go under the shelter. Then it got cold. I think we lost five.

We are trying just letting the bucks loose. There is so much brush on their side of the land, I am thinking they will stay away from the berries.

Speaking of berries, we ate some of our strawberries today. I am so excited for the blueberries. There are a million of them. That will be grand. We started putting down some cardboard around the artichokes to prevent weeds. I am so tired of weeds. We need to mulch better. Life is too short to weed so much.

Blooming Onion Heaven

We found this recipe for blooming onions. We tried to do the blooms but it was a pill so we decided to just make rings. They were the best onion rings I have ever had! Even the kids loved them.

Cut up a Vidalia onion (or four!!). Mix an egg with a cup of milk. Dip the onion in that and then cover with the following:

1 cup flour, 1.5 tsp salt, 1.5 tsp cayenne, 1 tsp paprika, ½ tsp black pepper, ¼ tsp oregano, 1/8 tsp thyme and 1/8 tsp cumin.

Fry ‘er up!

Then, for the dipping sauce, mix up: ½ cup mayo, 2 tbsp horseradish, 1 tsp ketchup, 1/3 tsp paprika, 1/3 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp oregano and a pinch of black pepper.

Why I Have No Home Phone

Dan decided to check in with AT&T. Turns out the special phone number he was given doesn't work--nobody he talked to when he called the regular number knew what it was and the "order number" he was given was also something no one was familiar with. Good grief. So, we cancelled the phone. I don't know what I am going to do--will try the library for awhile. Will look around at wireless cards. Will probably whine a lot. It will probably be good for me.

We have the mud room ready for tile--we won't be able to use the basement at all for a couple of days. It is the room at the bottom of the stairs and the entry room. Alec will sleep in Ev's bottom bunk.

Help with Mini Me's

I could use some help with the following problem. When we got married on Maui, we had this collage made. I love it, but it is falling apart. The company that made it doesn't exit any longer--I would have sent it in for repairs. I just don't know what to do. I can keep gluing then back on and then have them fall off when I try to dust it or look at it sideways, OR I can come up with something else. The little people are about 3 or 4 inches tall. I thought about putting it in a shadow box, but if anyone has an idea for me, I'd appreciate it.

Cavity Free

Took the kids to the dentist. This is the second cleaning they've had here. They did a bunch of x-rays that my very good insurance didn't cover last time so I made sure they were having none today. The gal who took Alec back was fine with that but asked if sealants were ok. I am fine with those on their molars. When I finally saw Alec again, I found out they had put some brand new thing on his teeth that gives him fluoride for six months! Good golly Miss Molly, I would never have agreed to that! They said to not use Listerine or it would all come off today, so we went home and did just that. The dentist seems typical of medical professionals down here--he thinks he is IT. We're not going back to him again. The guy I saw last time was ok, so I might take them there next time.

Have a question for you all--none of my kids have ever had a cavity. Is that normal? Dan and I have mouths full of them. We obviously take care of the kids' teeth, but nothing heroic. I am amazed we have made it this far with nary a single one. I was going to ask the dentist today, but I was irked with him.

Afterwards, we looked around for furniture. I thought I found a modern looking lazy boy recliner that would work in our room, but I took the fabric sample home and it is the more aqua blue that will, indeed, not work. Drat. It was nice.

We got the bathroom painted yesterday and one coat of paint on the den. Just had to stop. Dan built the step for the shower (it was built higher up and needs a step to get down--he had to build a sturdier one so we could tile). Tonight, he will tile. Tomorrow, he will grout. Also tomorrow, we need to empty out the mudroom and get the remaining tile up so Saturday he can put down that tile. Making progress.

I get to scrapbook tomorrow night for a bit. I am all caught up except the album of this house. I could do it at home, but I miss my Wesleyan ladies. We got our work books for the Bible Bee and need to get working on those. Yikes.

AT&T swore that by Monday they would call with their decision about bringing us DSL or not. That means Dan will cancel the phone Monday.

Bunch of Grumps

I have a bunch of grumpy people helping me today. Joy. I taped and edged the primer in the den and Alec is doing the walls. I am waiting for Ian to finish the bathroom floor so I can get in there to paint. I gotta, gotta get the bathroom done today and while I am waiting between coats, I might as well do the den, right? Have all the doors and windows open for air.

Dan has been calling AT&T weekly to bug them to get us DSL. Months of getting the run around. This week we decided we are getting a firm answer or we are cancelling our home phone with them. We already switched cell phone companies because of this. It seems silly to be begging them to let us buy more services from them. They have told us to go to all the neighbors and get them to agree to sign up--like that is our job?? We have had DSL in two areas more rural than we are now, so we know it isn't crazy to expect the availability.

I'll send out an email with my cell phone if he does have it shut off. Of course, the biggest change will be I won't even have dial up at home. I didn't love the wireless card I tried when we first moved here. At least not more than I loved the $60 a month I had to pay to get it. I am going to try just going to the library a few times a week and see if I can live with that. If not, I will get a card from someone other than AT&T. It is so hard to be used to something and then lose it.

Rena's Garden: RIP

Good gracious--I "walked the grounds" this afternoon. I haven't visited my garden in a week. What a laugh--it is DOA. There are a few things growing in there. I might get a salad or two out of it but the weeds have won. I think we will just till it under and then toss out some green manure seeds and let them rise up.

The blueberry bushes are full of young berries--hundreds and hundreds. I saw some strawberries out there (because we never got around to pinching off the flowers). I have a few artichokes that might actually produce this year. I will be happy if most of them just survive.

Will have to plan some time next week to work on that kind of stuff. Ha.

Good Gracious, I am Tired

Needed milk and had a walmart list, so I ran out this morning. Got some lamps for our bedroom and a bookshelf for my craft room and I can't remember what else. Got home and tried to rest. My family all think when I am resting it is a great time to ask me questions--all of them do this. Adam came in about five times asking questions about adding up all his bank accounts and money in various jars at home. Then, Evan came in to ask how much 3 divided by 5 divided by 4 was. Told him if he got his calculator I could tell him, but he figured he could do it on the calculator himself. Good.

Now, I am trying to smack some energy into my poor old bod. Alec and I are getting the bathroom ceiling and walls primed--somehow. Not sure who is doing what. And we have to move the mudroom stuff around so Ian and Adam can pull up the rest of the tiles. Ian does it because he is told to, but Adam loves it. Never seen a kid that likes work more than he does.

Dan has to pick up ceiling paint tonight and then he will finish painting the ceiling. Hopefully, tomorrow, we can paint the den and the bathroom. Need to finish prepping some walls in the den, though. Might be Thursday when the den gets finished. We are moving at break-neck speed right now, but I need this to be done.

Bought our tile last night--the van looked like a low-rider on the way home. I just decided today the kitchen cabinets would look neat if we painted them red--like the red curtain behind the chair in the picture I posted. Dan even liked that idea.

I Think We Have It

This is the best I could come up with. I took a red curtain out of Adam's room to see if that would work for the living room and, indeed, I think it will.

Pictures For Theresa

This is Toph the Puppy--we gave her a bath before we gave her away

This is the race car we went to see at Dan's work last week

Rainy Monday

Rainy and 63 here--that is so nice after all these 80 degree days. We have had sooooo much rain since we have been here.

I thought we'd get the den and bathroom painted last week, but I didn't plan well. This week, though, I think we can get it done. We need to get to the store to get our tile and make sure nothing is special order. I am optimistically thinking we might get the little bathroom floor done Friday night and then the mudroom done over the weekend. We'll see. The boys are chipping up that old tile--Ian seems to have a knack for doing so.

Found a couple of unpainted furniture stores in the area. I want to put an armoire in the kitchen instead of building a pantry. I am thinking unpainted might be the way to go. I stopped in a furniture store in town I had yet to visit. They were so fancy--over the top stuff. Lots of animal prints and fancy carved furniture. On Thursday the kids go to the dentist on that side of town, so afterwards we will check out the unpainted furniture places.

I am quite ready to be done with the house.

Happy Mama's Day

Adam made me this for Mother's Day. I had to spend the evening in my bedroom last night, as he made it on the kitchen counter and didn't want me to see it. The funny part of the picture is that at the very bottom you can see something orange. That would be my belly!!

Alec and Dan gave me a Magnolia tree! Ev gave me a hibiscus and Ad and Ian gave me various flowering things. After breakfast we will go to plant it all. Actually, I will sit under a tree and give directions. And speaking of hibiscus, Adam's hibiscus we brought down from Wisconsin is finally growing. We were sure it had croaked.

Dan has to put the trim back up and then I will have them haul everything back into the craft room. The floor looks great--I can't believe how quickly he knocked it together yesterday.

We had the funniest talk at dinner last night. Did I tell you about how the younger three planned to go to Mars in twenty years? Well, they all agreed it was not right to go on such a dangerous mission when one has a family to take care of, so they decided they needed to wait to get married until they got back. Adam finally decided he couldn't wait that long to get married, so he bailed out of the trip. He wants to be married when he is 20 (fine with me, as long as he can support a family). They tried to recruit Alec, but he is too old to join the fun.

Then the conversation turned to Adam's career. He wanted to be a doctor but decided he didn't want to wash his hands that much so he would become a cook. We explained that cooks have to wash their hands a lot, also. Then he thought he would be a baker. I explained bakers have to get up really early. So, now he is looking for a job where you don't have to wash your hands too much and can get up at 7:00. Funny, funny kid. We were trying to convince him he would be a great architect, as he really would. At his age, Alec was sure he'd be a pastor. That plan has long past.

Hot, Hot, Hot

It is 10:45 and 86 degrees. I have the air on and a fan overhead. I no longer do hot.

Dan is putting the flooring down--the problem he is having is the same as in Alec's room. The natural color of wood we picked comes with two very distinct colors in the box--one is a blonde natural and other is very red. In Alec's room, we started putting down both together and it looked terrible. So, we have to buy a bunch of extra boxes so we can pull out all of one color. I suppose we should have switched to a different color but thought they should all be the same down stairs.

Alec is finishing the fence. Dan didn't put in all the screws when he put it up, in order to save time, so Alec is finishing that off. Ian is work on removing the tiles in the mudroom right now. I think Dan is tiling that next weekend. The tile in there right now is the industrial looking stuff you see in schools. Ian took down the stair rail for me yesterday--he did a good job on it. They love getting to use drills. Let's see, I think that is all on the home improvement front.

That cardinal is still stalking me. We finally decided it is because there is a bird feeder on the fig tree and he is trying to tell us to fill 'er up. Well, there is no way I am reinforcing negative behavior, so he will just have to find some food somewhere else.

Bedroom

Gee, it doesn't look like much in this picture. That's my old hope chest in front and I think you can see the night stand ok--the dresser is the same style. Dan said he misjudged how much higher the bed is now as he got up this morning. Need to get lamps and get my pictures on the wall and I need a mirrors for above the dresser. And we need to get the crib up. And I would like some kind of rocking chair. But that is all.

Calling All Interior Designers

I decided to upload a couple of pics at home. This one took an hour. In fact, I moved the furniture around since then. The nice thing is the furniture just slides around with no effort on the laminate floor, so I can do it myself.

So, here is my problem--I can't figure out where to put the chair and TV. Obviously, the chair in this pic is out of the conversation area and looks dumb. And the TV is driving me nuts. I am toying with the idea of putting it on the wall above the fireplace, but I just hate having it in such a prominent place. I moved the chair in front of the glass door facing into the other pieces and the side table next to it. That looks good, but this darn TV is driving me nuts. I don't have another room to put it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well Furnished

The furniture is all here and we all survived, even the pessimist. It is all lovely. I am running out now to look for sheets. My bedding from Overstock.com came today and it actually matches perfectly--amazing! I get to sleep in a real bed tonight--we haven't had a bed frame for three years.

Will try posting pics later.

Dan is taking the baseboard off in my craft room. This is a little room, so hopefully it will be easy to get the floor down tomorrow.

I Can't Think of a Title

I still have evil dial-up. This morning, it took 27 minutes to download an email with pictures of Toph the puppy. Her new owner thought I needed pictures of a puppy I owned until three days ago. Funny kid.

I have my other very smart but very unwise child looking up "smart" and "wise" in the dictionary right now so he can explain the difference to me. Good grief.

My pal from high school, Debbie, sent me an unbelievable box of baby things yesterday. Clothes and blankets and crib sheets and a cute little doll--it was like Christmas. She sent a blanket that is like chenille on one side and satin on the other--I want to wrap up in it.

Crazy Margie turns 50 on the 9th--ain't that grand?

We are going to 3M today--the Nascar car they sponsor is going to be there. We aren't Nascar people, but I thought they'd enjoy it. Then we're picking up our pictures from Sears. Then we are cleaning out the rooms in preparation for the furniture coming tomorrow.

Gas and Pessimism

Adam told me his thinks his farts have changed smell from the time he was six 'til he turned seven. I decided to play along, so I asked if they got better or worse. He said he wasn't sure because he couldn't remember his last fart of being six. At that point I had to start laughing.

I am sure I am the last person to note this, but I have become such a pessimist. I assume every situation I have ahead of me is going to go poorly. I called Math-U-See to see about switching some of the teacher videos with DVD and I was sure I was not going to get a favorable response. The gal was actually very nice and gave me a good price. Normally, you have to buy the DVD's along with the teacher guides and they cost about $50-$60.

And then there is the furniture delivery. You know, I hate having any kind of worker in my house. And, even though I bought the two sets a month apart, they are being delivered pretty much at the same time on Friday. I am sure this will be a mess. See? A terrible pessimist.

Note to self: At 30 weeks pregnant, it is a bad idea to go to a pizza buffet when you are very hungry. Poor choice.

Chest of Hope

Ian keeps referring to my hope chest as a hope box. That seems funny. My mother used to call it my hopeless chest. Nice gal, old mom was.

I just heard that some company, maybe Google, is buying goats to mow their lawn. Now, technically, I think sheep would be better, but they didn't ask me. Got me thinking, though, that we should fence in a few places, like the berries and then just let the goats loose in the yard. We have yet to mow this year and I have some grass a couple of feet tall. The neighbor, who has a perfect yard, must love us. I really think we should try this. Are ya listening, honey? I have been tethering them to trees to let them eat brush, but they keep getting all tied up and then yell a lot.

We decided to floor the craft room this weekend, mostly because it is smaller than the den. So, going to work on painting the den and bathroom and then put in that floor. Have I mentioned we need to get the basement DONE in May to stay on track? That will be no small feat.

Told Dan to get the kids focused on plants for Mother's Day gifts--someone mentioned chocolate and lotion, this morning--NO!! I don't need any more of either. That is one funny thing about this pregnancy--I used to love dark chocolate, but I have lost my taste for it.

What's in a Name?

I heard from the gal who took the brown puppy this afternoon. She said they named her Belle. The gal who took the other pup named her Lily. The very funny part of this is that we had originally thought to name our baby Lily Isabelle and call her Lily Belle. The problem with that is her initials would be L.I.E. and that seems wrong. So, we planned to go with Lily Elyse. The neat thing about that is her initialls would be L.E.E., which happens to be Dan's middle name. I just think Lily Belle sounds so sweet. I suppose we could just name her that. L.B.E. is safe.

It doesn't bother me at all that they are naming their dogs the same names we are thinking for our baby. When people name their dogs people names, they tend to pick really girlie names and that is the kind of name I want for our babe.

The Week Ahead

Little Toph the puppy goes home today, which means today is the last day of having a puppy at our house--forever! They are cute, but there is no way I want another one, ever. I was noting how the kids really like kittens over puppies. Here it is the last morning with the puppy and my kids don't want to play with her but have the kittens out to play with.

Our bedroom is pretty much done--just waiting for furniture Friday. How exciting that will be.

I am hoping we can get the den and downstairs bathroom painted this week--those are the only two rooms left to paint down there. The walls need a fair bit of patching, to it might take awhile. If that happens, I am hoping we can get the floor down in the den next weekend. I keep teasing Dan he just goes to work to get a break from house work.

I can't believe how much better I feel being in a room that is finished than being in a room that is still a mess. It really affects my mood.

Well, I am writing this to avoid ironing the wrinkly pile waiting for me. That is about my least favorite chore ever.

Wife List

Adam told me he made a list of requirements for a good wife.

#1 Can't like rock music
#2 Has to love Jesus
#3 Can't like beer
#4 Can't want to kiss him before they get married

Smart vs. Wise

We were watching Jeopardy the other night. My FIVE year old remembered the winner's three digit total from the night before and, in his head, added it to her five digit total for the current day. Five years old. That is a smart kid. The next day, he decided to stick his foot in the floor vent, from which the cover had been removed. He disconnected the duct and Dan had to stop working on carpet to fix it. That was not wise. Need to work on wisdom.

Dan got the carpet in our room yesterday. He had to seam for the first time. He isn't thrilled with those results, but I think it will be fine. He has to stretch it a little more and then we can get the closet put back together. Both the living room and bedroom furniture sets are coming next Friday. I still have to get window dressing and some other little things, but the bedroom will be done for the most part. We need to try to get the crib put together at some point. We aren't convinced we have all the parts.

I got my family scrapbooks caught up yesterday. I started up my Cricut, which I haven't used since we moved. All I have left to do in the scrapbook area is starting the album for this house. I have done an album for every house in which we have lived. I don't even know where I lived the first few years of my life--I hope it will help the kids to remember the places they've been. Of course, if we quit moving so much, that would help, too. It dawned on me my kids can probably relate to army brats.

Thrilling news: Crazy Margie's son placed in a regional speech tournament last week. The finals are mid June at Bob Jones University, right down here by me. They will stay with us and I am so excited to have her down here. I might not let her leave. Hopefully it won't be 100 degrees while she is here. Bring shorts, Marg.

Standing O #2

Oh, my, I got so much done this morning. Someone be proud.

I ordered new lenses for my very scuffed glasses--have been meaning to do so for months. Found a new mirror and light for my vanity, a new ceiling fan for my bedroom (we have one in almost every room in the house!) and a cabinet to go over Alec's toilet for more storage.

We finally decided we were going lower end with our living room furniture. We couldn't decide about getting higher quality or cheaper stuff, knowing the kids will destroy either eventually. Walked into a furniture store in town and ordered up a nice set, to be delivered next Friday. Hopefully, my bedroom stuff will come next week, too. Won't that be grand?

Then I uploaded April's pictures and ordered them at Walgreen's. Honestly, I am just full of myself for what I got accomplished. I spent less time doing all that than Evan and I spent the other night looking for bedding (in vain).

The Bible Bee materials are finally available so I got those ordered so the kids can start studying. That takes place in the fall. I wish we hadn't signed up, at this point, but we did so we will do our best.
