Went to Walmart to try to stock up on some food basics. I was thinking how hard it is to stock up because all these people eat so much food, and I can't seem to shop fast enough!! Goodness. Seems like I am always off to the store and since the store isn't close, it seems like I spend forever on the road. This is the curse of being unorganized. I have the kitchen cabinets and drawers organized now. I was going to wait to organize the pantry until we move it back into the kitchen, but that has to wait for the walls to be painted and the new floor in.
I think after Dan gets home, Alec and I will head up to IKEA because I think there are a few more IKEA type things I need for organization. Again, four hours total drive time. Good grief.
Alec is painting the kitchen cabinet doors in the garage and Dan is working on the trim and fixing walls. I am pretty close to a working schedule. I just have to write it out for everyone. Need to hear how Dan wants the evenings to work. It is getting dark sooner so we need to change outdoor chore time. Always change.
Back to drinking green smoothies. OJ, yogurt, spinach, blueberries, oatmeal and some almond butter. What a great way to get full and eat a ton of good stuff fast.
Bought mini marshmallows and toothpicks so the kids could make marshmallow buildings.

Organizing With Nail Polish
I'm putting kitchen drawers back in and trying to organize utensils. Problem is, so many people empty the dishwasher, we often can't find things. I am using nail polish to identify which drawer utensils go in. That is what I am working on right now. Painting the tips of utensils with blue, green or red polish--glad they come in those funny colors. Hope it sticks through a washer cycle.
Cooking up one of our chickens on the stove top and will make soup out of it. Bean soup. Maybe make some bread. Oh, I have a good herbed bread recipe--maybe I'll do that.
Started working with the schedule last night--probably by the end of the school year I will finally have the schedule perfect. Great.
Taking Addie out tonight on a date. I guess I ought to get a little more prettied up. I was thinking this was a stay at home day, hence the Green Bay Packer Sweatshirt. How they doin', anyway? Sniffly
Since everyone under eight had sniffles, we couldn't all go to bowling, but I decided to let the big boys go. I am not sure that was a great idea. I dropped them off, stopped at the milk store and went home. Nursed the baby and we got right back in the car to pick them up. Two hours driving total. Didn't really have anything to do in that town for the time they were bowling. Not sure I would go that route again.
I am starting to feel the cold in my head and throat. Been taking my stuff I take so we will see what happens. I am surprised I haven't been sick earlier--I feel so run down.
Strawberries got all weeded so I just need to spread the mulch. I have three artichokes that are huge and look really good--that is of the 30 or so I planted! There is another small one. I need to mulch them, also. If I actually got artichokes next year, I would cry with joy.
Not even sure what tomorrow holds--not sure I am ready to think about it.

Monday, All Over Again
Man, the weeks just fly by. I remember when I only had a few kids and how long days would seem and how I had a hard time filling them. I remember going shopping to waste time. Now I cringe to think I have to go to a store and the days are over so quickly. Maybe I should stop wasting time blogging, eh?
We went to see a family perform last night--we'd seem them last year at the former AOG church in Wilson. They are friends of FFN. They are very talented and we enjoyed it.
Took the little boys to Sam's this morning, as my membership is almost up and I don't want to renew. We have enough chocolate chips for a long, long time. FFN laughed when she was down here at what a big bag of chocolate chips we had.
That was really all I got done today. Uploaded pictures to Walgreen's to pick up later. Need to make my bed since I just napped in it. Can't remember if I fell asleep or not. Lil is napping. Little boys are on the tramp. Big boys are doing school. Alec did math this vacation month. I asked Ian what he wishes we'd have done that we didn't this month and he said, "Social Studies." Ummm.....ok, you can do social studies.
Three people at Sam's commented on the little boys' good behavior. I think people's standard for child behavior is so low anymore, just seeing mildly well behaved kids is surprising. At the concert last night there were a bunch of toddlers and preschool aged kids in the second row who were such pills, I just could not believe it.
And on that note, I would just like to say the following to anyone reading this: If you give kids toys and books to occupy them when they are in church, you're just teaching them to not pay attention. If you make them sit there quietly and be bored, they might actually get so bored they pay attention to the guy up front talking. Just sayin...

Food Snobs
I bought the kids some Good Eats DVDs a few weeks back. They certainly are entertaining, but the kids, of course, want to make everything they see--like Creme Brulee and Crepe Suzette. This morning, Ian convinced his father to make crepes. So, at about 7:30 they start mixing and then Ian announces it has to sit for an hour. An HOUR??
Whatever, so we watched the episode on crepes again to get the recipe for the filling. At the end he plops on a scoop of vanilla ice cream. None in the house, but I just happened to buy a new ice cream maker last week, so we whipped up a quick batch. It is a Cuisinart one with the basket you freeze and it worked really well. We had a cheaper one years ago and it never froze it well enough.
Soooo, at about 8:45, we were sitting down to Crepe Suzette with ice cream. Now, that is GOOD EATS. We are in no way opposed to having ice cream for breakfast, by the way.

Boogers
Miss Lil has a stuffy nose--isn't that sad? She sneezed this morning and what came out was disturbing. She seems to be in pretty good spirits. Hopefully, she doesn't get worse. There is a family band we've seen before playing about 1.5 hours from here tonight and I really want to see them.

October 23
Today is our 18th anniversary. It is also the anniversary of two other couples I know and two other friends' birthday. How ironic, huh?
Took Lily in for a vaccination shot this morning. She handled it very well. I could write three pages about vaccinations, but I don't want to bore you or myself. She handled it very well and is now napping. I am going to whip out this post and then clean up some stuff.
Third coat of paint on the cabinets looks good. Not sure what his plan is for this weekend. Maybe painting the cabinet doors. He painted the drawer fronts, so those could go back on.
Lots of folks I know up north are getting H1N1. Haven't heard about many down here, although a 30-something year old father of two who was an associate pastor at a local church died from it this week. No idea if he was otherwise healthy. Drives me nuts they never report that part of the story.
Ian is handling life in a cast well. Going through a lot of Saran Wrap--that is how we are waterproofing it for work and bathing.
The vacation month is flying by. Next week I need to get ready for starting school again and an updates schedule for everyone. We only have three weeks of school and then a week off around Thanksgiving. Then three weeks back on and another two off for the holidays. Then three solid months of school before another break.

Funny Clothes Stories
Yesterday, Lily had a huge spit up on her jammies so we went to change her clothes. Grabbed a replacement, but realized the spit was dripping off my pants, so I wiped them off with the outfit. Then I grabbed another and found out it was too small when we tried it on. Then the next outfit lasted about an hour before I realized I didn't put her diaper on well and she peed on it. New outfit on for nap. And then it was time to go to pictures. Put a going-to-town outfit on and brought her two outfits for pictures. Didn't want to worry about them not making it to pictures. Including the outfit she wore to bed last night, that is NINE outfits in one day. That is a record.
The other story is Dan asked me yesterday where his little pocket sized spiral notebook was--beats me. Last night I was emptying the washer and found this little spiral part of a notebook with no notebook--just a white sheen over all the clothes. It totally disintegrated in the wash. And, NO, I don't check pockets before I wash clothes. Good times.

WOW oh WOW
What a day. Left for Lily's pictures with the whole crew (in the sixth outfit she had on today--but that is another story) at 9:30. Pictures at Sears turned out pretty mediocre and, lucky me, prices just increased today! And the woman had no idea how to work all the new computer codes--it was a mess.
In the midst of that, I called the doctor to see if we could get Ian in for an x-ray on his hand. He hit it against a door while running down the hall yesterday morning. He bowled left handed yesterday. I knew it hurt, but he really didn't complain about it much. It was a little swollen--I really didn't expect it to be anything. They could get us in about 2 hours later in the office that was close to the mall we were at but far from home, so we decided to wander the mall.
We happened on another photo place called Picture People. I just went in to ask about prices and, long story short, about 45 minutes later I was leaving the mall with fabulous pictures and made it to the doctor with five minutes to spare. The pics I posted are from there. The picture with the pink and black dress has her bare feet in it, which looks precious, but it didn't fit in my scanner.
OK, so on to the doctor's office. They took an xray and the bone in his hand that attaches to his ring finger on his right hand is broke. Off to the ortho doc. Dan met us there and took the three boys with working hands home. I'm not sure it took a half hour to get the cast on and be on our way. He'll have it three weeks. Ha! He thought he was getting out of chores tonight because of it. Funny boy.
We got home at 4:30!! I felt bad because the boys spent the majority of the day just sitting around waiting, so we took them to Pizza Inn for dinner. And now we are home and ready for bed!

Home and Back to Crazy
Man, things sure take longer with a baby around. I was so busy all day and it doesn't seem like I got a lot done. Back to the eye doc to try other contacts. I just give up. I can't fine any that are comfy--my eyes are dry. I used to be able to wear them. I don't know why I even care about it--glasses hide a lot of wrinkles.
Home and fed Lily and talked to her until she was ready to nap--maybe a half hour. Then, out to spread more mulch. We got the whole front of the house done. Today we worked around the fig tree and the tiers going up the stairs to the gate. Spent about two hours on that. Next we'll move to the strawberry patch.
So, then lunch and started working on the kitchen. Almost everything is put back, except the stuff that goes in drawers--that has to wait until the drawers are painted and back in. Have never come up with a fabulous way to organize vitamins and other pill-type stuff. I needed to go out to look for a dress for Lily's pictures on Wednesday, so after I got as far as I could in the kitchen, I took Lil and Adam down to Anderson. We got some organization junk at Target for the pills and then to TJ Maxx and mall to look for dresses. I wanted something fancy. Everything is red for Christmas right now. I finally found a pink and black one that is so stinking cute. She has a head band that matched it. I bought shoes to match but I think she will go barefoot. Can't wait to have them done.
Wasted so much time shopping, called Dan and told him he better put dinner together. That worked out well because it was stir fry and I can't make a good stir fry for nothin'. Not sure what my issue is.
Are you bored yet? So, after dinner, we put Lily's room back together after the paint job and now I am telling you all about it. I have to go through the other stuff I bought her and then work on the pill organization until I crash. Oh, man, I need to work on my bible study, too.
Only about half unpacked from the trip. Dan is painting the crown molding in the kitchen today and then will paint the cabinets tomorrow. Getting gravel delivered for the driveway tomorrow.
This month off school is exhausting!! Ian keeps asking me if we are doing something tomorrow besides bowling and I keep telling him to stop asking!! Let me get through today first!

Day THREE of Charleston
Just left Charleston. Waiting for Lily to have enough and start screaming. She really does not like driving. I wish she'd just fall asleep but she will scream for a long time -- really long time. Wow.
We went to the beach after I picked up the fishermen yesterday. We didn't wear swim suit because it was only about 60 degrees. Made a sand castle and walk down the beach. It was fun to just roll up our pants and walk into the water. Adam ended up basically swimming fully dressed, which he thought was grand until the wind came up and he wanted to go home. Those life lessons we all have to learn. The water was really warm and the beach was pretty. It was a nice afternoon.
Lily got up 5:30 the first morning and 6:30 the second morning so I was a zombie by 8:00 last night. Evan kept trying to sleep horizontally in the bed with me. It was a really nice hotel suite with a nice whirlpool tub.
Oh, Lil has taken off. Unfortunately, she just took a long nap and is well fed, so she might last a long time.
This morning we took a horse-drawn carriage tour of historical Charleston. You would not believe what a million dollars will buy you there--NOT MUCH. It is one of the oldest cities in America. It was interesting to learn about.
We went to the tourist-y market place afterwards and ate at a crab shack before hitting the road.

Day TWO
The boys and Dan went fishing on a boat I found somehow on the web--can't even remember how I found this guy. I finally called Dan when it was getting close to the time to pick them up. They were having fun but weren't catching things they could keep. Dan said he took many pics.
Lil and I went downtown. Started at the visitors' center. Found a bead store that looked fairly close on the map. Turned out to be a good long walk through a seedy neighborhood, but we had nothing else to do, so I now have some new beads. Dumbest part of having jewelry making for a hobby is I hardly every wear jewelery.

Pics of Charleston
Day ONE
Got up early and went to The boat to take us to Fort Sumter. It is an island--free to go into but he boat ride must have cost us $60 for everyone. Alec thought it was the bees knees. I gave Adam my camera and he took 60 pictures. Remember when you actually had to pay for every picture you took??
We went to a seafood place called Shem Creek Bar & Grill--someone had mentioned it to Dan.I ate clams and crab cake and red rice and fried okra. I was proud of Alec--he is getting more adventurous--he loved the clams and had crab cakes, too, and tired my okra.
On the way back, just over the big fancy suspension bridge, after I thought to myself what a bad neighborhood we seemed to be in, we go a flat tire. Seriously. So Dan got new tires while the kids swam in the hotel pool. I think we are off to Battery Street after the kids get out of the huge whirlpool tub in our room. We got a really neat room with lots of room.

Off We Go
Half way to Charleston. Lil is yelling. Dan ended up taking half a day off to get on our way. Can't believe we got everything jammed in the van.

My kids have not been to the ocean. We tried to see it in Maine but the tide was WAAAAAAY out. They are excited, of course. I have five of us fairly packed. Two to go and then all the extra stuff it takes to make a road trip fun. We are seriously going to put a DVD player on the back of Lil's seat and play something for her to see if it entertains her enough to stop the screams.
I do not look forward to packing the van--it is gonna be tight.
The plan is to go to Ft. Sumter tomorrow morning and then the beach in the afternoon. Saturday, the men are going fishing in the morning. Sunday morning we're taking a carriage ride. And then home.

PINK DAY
Painting Ian's former room pink for the little girl. Figured it would be good to have it de-stink the days we are out of town. Did you know we leave tomorrow nigh for Charleston until Sunday?

Calling Mrs. Tooth Fairy
Alec did just fine with his teeth extractions. Man, the roots on those teeth were freaky--they were certainly never going to come out accidentally!! Ian babysat the little boys while Lily and I were with Alec. They did fine--watched a movie.
When we got home, we found a kitten at the glass door just soaking wet. It rained all day--not sure why some kittens stayed dry and this one ended up soaked. It was shivering so I let the middle boys bring it in and give it a blow dry.
A woman came tonight who will basically do anything for $25 an hour. She is going to feed our animals while we are in Charleston. Yes, FFN, that is what we get for moving away from you. Feeling mighty dumb about that right now. She was a nice gal--former engineer--has never fed farm animals. I am sure it will be fine. We told her to take as many kittens home with her as she wants.
Tomorrow I need to work on putting the kitchen back together. I know what will happen. I will be really happy with how things look in the cabinets and then realize I have three more bins full of stuff I need to place. I already have a nice box for Goodwill. I will be really happy with how things look in the cabinets and then realize I have three more bins full of stuff I need to place. I already have a nice box for Goodwill. It is horrible how much stuff I continue to give them because it just means too much stuff is coming into my house!!

Week One of Vacation Down--I'm Pooped!
Can't remember yesterday. I'm sure we did something--give me a minute. Friday we went to a dinner for Dan's 20th anniversary at 3M. I remember that. Nothing to write home about there. Except Alec babysat Lily and it went fine.
OK, yesterday...Dan worked on the kitchen and I scrapbooked. He pulled every single thing out of the cabinets and then sanded the fronts and then I found out I was supposed to put it all back in. I wasn't ready to work on organizing the kitchen. I have maybe half of it back in, but I am going slowly because I want to do it right. I am seriously going to make a list of every thing in every cabinet and put it on the inside of the cabinet door so everyone knows where stuff is--so many of us clean the kitchen and put away groceries and we are always losing stuff!!
Lily continues to sleep well and was so happy tonight, it was hilarious. Like, I don't think you could possibly be happier than she was. And the boys can't get enough of her. They talk to her and kiss and hug her all the time. ALL THE TIME.
Today we went to the Wesleyan church and listened to missionaries from Albania. They said if you are from America, people figure you are a Jehovah's Witness or a Mormon. Europe seems to be the new mission field--there are so few Christians there anymore. And we just heard a DVD from Ken Ham talking about how it started when the churches started telling people they didn't need to believe in the literal six day creation. If you can take that part out of the bible, why take any of it seriously?
Ken Ham also said in Australia they say "nurse the baby" instead of "HOLD the baby." My kids cracked up over that and keep teasing each other about nursing the baby.
Tomorrow, Alec gets two permanent teeth pulled to aid in the beautification of his mouth. Hope he handles it as well as Adam did. We leave for Charleston Thursday, so I pray he has no complications.
October 31, we celebrate (??) being down here one year. That means we've been gone a year and that means the kids have not seen their grandmother in a year. That isn't good. I gotta get them up there.

Back Already?
I missed too many folks on Facebook and reading other people's blogs! Couldn't last the whole month.
We've been working on weeding and spreading mulch--fun. Actually, the kids like spreading mulch. Not weeding so much, though. We finished the big garden out front and are working on the tiers on the side of the house. After that we'll move to the berries. We took today off. I had to be to the eye doc early for a contact check and to get my new glasses--will have to post a pic. I like them. Can't find contacts I like, however. I should just give up. A least glasses hide wrinkles.
Been doing a Beth Moore bible study on Esther. Love it. We went to see Ken Ham at Dr. Charles Stanley's church in Atlanta last Sunday--that was fun. Got the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made DVD from Answers in Genesis--wow, Evan loves and it has been talking about it a lot. They are all amazed Lily already has all the eggs she will ever use and that her part of their nieces and nephews are already in her.
Dan is working on the kitchen. He is planning to get it done this month. He is planing to do the honey harvest the first weekend of November.
His 20th anniversary with 3M is this year. We get to go to a dinner tonight. Alec is babysitting Lily and the other beasts--I told him he might actually have to change a diaper!!
