Snowy Saturday

Yes, I know nobody reading this is excited about snow anymore, but we got the most lovely snowfall last night. Maybe two inches of wet, snowball making stuff. It clung to the trees and was so pretty. It is probably 40 right now and very sunny. I am sure it won't last long. Ian and Adam are building a snowman and trying to sled on big bin lids. Dan took Alec and Evan to the mountains to tube. They were supposed to go two weeks ago, but that was when the ice storm hit. My biannual homeschool group meeting was supposed to be that day, also, and then was moved to today. It got cancelled again. The planetarium trip got cancelled last night too. People do not DO winter here.

Dan told me that this was the first time he replaced an alternator and he was really nervous. He said it was easier than he expected. THIS IS WHY WE LIVE THIS WAY. I want the boys to not be scared to just do something themselves. It saves money. It saves the time of finding someone else to do it and dealing with them doing a poor job or not showing up when they said they would, etc. Of course, there are times when we flub things up, but so do the professionals. My van would have been at the shop for at least a day for something that would have taken an hour to do. I'm just sayin'.

On a totally different note, I have been thinking about how parents like to say that you have to leave kids alone work things out amongst themselves so they learn how to do so. It just dawned on me how dumb that is. What other things in life do you just leave a kid alone to figure out themselves? Math? Driving? Potty Training? You guide them through those things until they can do it alone. But people leave kids on their own to deal with bullies and bossy friends and mean girls. That is lame. That is why kids become bullies or victims or mean girls. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

The plan is to work on recipes today. Between all the other stuff. I hate how when a mom has some free alone time, the first thought is about which chore they should work on. Hate that.
